History. The palace was built in 1955 and named Jubilee to mark the Silver Jubilee of Emperor Haile Selassie. After a coup attempt in the Guenete Leul Palace in 1960, the Emperor made the Jubilee Palace his main residence. However, the seat of government remained at the Imperial Palace. An iconic government building in Ethiopia, it was the last residence of Emperor Haile Selassie. Following his overthrow in 1974, the Palace was abandoned for several years and then used as the Presidential residence and as a venue for state receptions.
